Notes: Six million women were called María and 3 million men were called José in Spain as of 2006. The top ten surnames in Spain are shared amongst almost 20% of the entire population. Most names ending in 'ez' refer to 'son of' - e.g. Gomez is son of Gonzalo, Fernandez is son of Fernando etc. Many common Spanish surnames originate from Germanic first names introduced to Spain during centuries V-VII by the Visigoths.
