List: Top Ten Subprime Losses Announced By Banks
Date: as of March 2008
Source: Company reports
Base: All banks who have officially announced subprime losses.
Notes: The table is based on the banks own figures as announced in their public company reports. A figure of US$400 billion has been mooted as the total amount of losses from the falling value of subprime mortgage assets for all banks and investment houses that have been involved. Wall Street's largest banks and brokers were forced to write down as much as $130 billion because of the slump in subprime-related debt while the rest of the losses will come from overseas, smaller US banks and investors in mortgage-related securities. Citigroup Inc., Merrill Lynch & Co. and Morgan Stanley were some of the heaviest hit with more than $40 billion of writedowns as record U.S. foreclosures plundered asset prices.
